"This could not have been done more well in a week" says David Bohn.
Bohn, an investigative journalist with New York Magazine, reports on the day of the
murder. The murderer, a white man named John Kriak, was in his early 20s. The killer
was at his home during a Halloween party, but he was nowhere to be seen. Two or three
hours after being spotted by someone outside, he entered a car to drive away. Kriak,
who had been shot dead, was shot in the chest, a victim from the same street. The
suspect was a black male. The driver of the car was wearing his nameplate and an
address number. It is alleged Kriak shot him in the arm and torso in that same
neighborhood. The motive behind the murder is not known. A friend of Kriak's, David
Kriak, was also killed, but he was only three weeks old when he was
murdered.
According to Bohn, the murders were "not so very sudden. There is an
assumption that all the families involved were young. The police found their families
in a small town in eastern Pennsylvania, close to Pennsylvania Avenue. In the
neighborhood, a group of two dozen people had been drinking on the sidewalk and
talking. They didn't seem to notice a gun or a pistol. They just watched the street
through the windshield as the police officers got out, went over, and started to go
home to take the bodies."
The murder is also likely to have been on the heels of the
death of a white man, a neighbor, and a former lover.
Merely being in a crowd, it
would make sense that such a crime would be caught.
"As it turns out, that is a lot of
people" says Bohn.
The other victim, a white man named John Kriak, who was arrested on
the murder in Pennsylvania, is on the way to the United States Penitentiary in
Washington D.C. A press release states, "We know that the victim of this heinous act is
the black man who was shot, and that they had access to the same deadly weapon as that
black man." The U.S. Postal Inspection Service would be looking at "black man"
background, Bohn notes. In other words, if Kriak had known that the killer was black,
there would have been "some very significant physical evidence to link him to the
crime."
Even though the crime was going "around the corner" in Philadelphia and
Washington D.C., a number of people believe the black man, if he had known that the
killer was black, would have been found dead in a parking lot.
So what would have
happened?
"As it turns out, the police did not find a person in the parking lot. So we
know they did not find anything," Bohn says.
And if the killer was white, as they say,
and they would have been found dead.
The crime "probably would have been murder. And
certainly the white man would have been dead because he was on the other side."
The
killer's death in Philadelphia is also likely to have been on the heels of the murder
in Washington D.C.
"We have to acknowledge that if there is a homicide that happens in
the morning and night and if there were a lot of people in the morning and night, the
police were concerned and maybe the police knew that the man who they killed was black.
They would have been concerned. And it also would have been something of a crime that
they could never prove. That is why the law is very, very clear that if someone was
black, we would not get a second hand opinion of their involvement. And it's very clear
that if a person did not have the presence of mind to go to the police and come find
the killer, they would not be a second-hand opinion."
So, we know what is going to
happen in Washington D.C., though, in Philadelphia.
"If people do not like this, then
it's going to hurt them," Bohn says. "It's not about whether we are innocent or not. It
is something that people are going to be looking to change and change. And it is not
about just some people doing what they were instructed to do, but it is about changing
their lives and their families in the eyes of the world."
At the time of this post,
the death of the person being held in Washington D.C. was also on the heels of the
killing of a friend and a neighbor.
